The article mentioned all emotions are valid; yet you mention he is “not permitted” to get upset. The great battle with his emotions is what is causing this. Most likely, he was taught to suppress his emotions which leads to the explosion the author wrote about. While the explosions are not pleasant, they should also not be prohibited as it is yet another shut down of someone’s feelings. Therapy may help him work through the issues he is experiencing, but telling him his is “not permitted” to get upset is shoving him right back in the hole he is trying to crawl out of. Emotional pain can be greater than most people realize, especially by those who were lucky enough to be loved, validated, and treated well in their relationships. Sending prayers to this man and hoping he can receive the validation, love, and acceptance he needs to know he matters.
